Traffic Lights may help to alleviate delays caused by major roadworks near Gloucester, the Highways Agency said.

A contraflow was put into place on the A40 between Highnam and Over on Monday as a 10m programme of resurfacing and other improvements continued.

Many commuters said the route was gridlocked and a school coach arrived in Gloucester nearly an hour late.

Project Manager David Stock said lights will be put up at Highnam roundabout to try to relieve the congestion.

"I got the engineer to have a look at the A40/A48 junction at Highnam to see whether something could be done there.

"We're going to look at what we can put in and run a trial there to see if it improves the situation."
