Cyclists' roadworks safety fears

Cyclists have complained that provisions made for them during a 10m road resurfacing scheme are inadequate.

The bike route along a stretch of the A40 between Gloucester and Highnam has been moved during the six month programme of works which began in May.

But some cyclists say the new temporary path is too narrow and signage has sent them into the face of oncoming traffic.

A statement from the Highways Agency said: "We will look again at the cycling provision."

Janet Hawkins cycles to and from work along the route.

"The first time I tried coming along here, the path that was left for cyclists was so narrow that my handlebar was catching on the tape that joined the road cones," she said.

"Then the signing was so bad that I ended up cycling in the face of oncoming traffic which was the scariest experience I've ever had, so I think they could do better as regards signing where the path actually goes."
