Chief constable is appointed OBE

Dr Brain praised the community for their efforts during last year's floods

The Chief Constable of Gloucestershire Constabulary, Dr Timothy Brain, has been appointed to the OBE in the Queen's 2008 Birthday Honours.

Dr Brain said he was "absolutely delighted" at his appointment for services to policing and to the communities of Gloucestershire.

Fire boss, Terry Standing, has been awarded the Queen's Fire Service Medal.

And Honor Ussher, 81, from Kempley has been appointed MBE after delivering Meals on Wheels for 35 years.

Dr Brain said: "In receiving this honour, I am conscious of the superlative way in which police, partner agencies and members of local communities worked together to overcome the difficulties presented by the flooding crisis of almost a year ago.

"This was the most significant peace-time emergency the country has ever faced but as a result of the constabulary's ability to meet whatever demands it is faced with, the support of our partners and the goodwill of local people the challenges presented by the floods and subsequent water shortage were overcome."
