A senior civil servant and former environmental adviser to Tony Blair commutes weekly by plane from his home in Gloucestershire to Edinburgh. As a former member of the sustainability commission, Richard Wakeford said the explosion in low-cost air travel was "unsustainable".
The commission said we should all take responsibility for promoting sustainability in our own lives.
Mr Wakeford, who works for the Scottish Executive, declined to comment.
Attracting talent
Tim Jeans, managing director of Monarch Airlines at Birmingham airport, said: "I find myself extraordinarily frustrated with this individual because he clearly doesn't practise what he preaches."
Mr Wakeford has been in charge of Scotland's Environment and Rural Affairs Department for two years.
The Executive said: "The Scottish Executive is committed to attracting talented people to work in Scotland.
"We recognise the skills, experience and contribution that people who live outside Scotland can bring to the Executive, and that there may be instances where personal circumstances prevent them from relocating here."
