Over the Christmas holidays, more people were breathalysed in Gloucs. than last year - and fewer arrested. Forty six people were arrested between 18 December and 2 January and more than 2,000 tests given: 79 at crash scenes with seven positive results. Inspector John Pickersgill said: "It is always disappointing for us to arrest anyone for drink driving."
Half of all the tests administered were in the Cheltenham and Tewkesbury area, police said.
Garry Handley, from Gloucestershire County Council, added: "I am delighted that there is a clear downward trend in the number of positive tests.
"I would like to remind drivers that the irresponsibility of drinking and driving is not a seasonal problem."
