 Pigeons can fly up to 500 miles a day |
A homing pigeon which veered off-course during a race from France has been found 3,000 miles away in Canada. Frank Brammer thought one of his birds had been killed when it disappeared on its way home to Gloucester in May.
So he was stunned when he heard from a woman in Port Colborne, Ontario, to say she had found the missing pigeon.
It is now recovering at the home of Canadian pigeon fancier Roland Breton. It is thought the pigeon may have hitched a lift on a passing ship.
Plastic ring
The birds can fly up to 500 miles a day, but would need to rest along the way.
Mr Brammer, 81, said: "I thought someone was having a joke at first as there is no way the bird could have flown all that way.
"The bird seems to have settled down well so it would be a shame to uproot him. I have told Mr Breton he can keep him."
Mr Breton plans to use the bird, which he has named Eerie, for breeding.
The pigeon was identified by the plastic ring it wears around its leg, which carries Mr Brammer's details.
