A 10-year restoration project is under way |
Gloucestershire is to get a share of 2.9m for a canal restoration project. The European money has been awarded to the British Waterways Trust which is involved with renovating the Cotswold Canal System.
British Waterways is one of five organisations to get a share of the grant from the European Union.
From a base in Stroud, the trust will carry out trials on innovative, environmentally-sensitive water filtering systems.
This should help further sustainable management of rivers and canals and will form part of the first 25m phase of the Cotswold Canals Project.
British Waterways currently looks after 2,000 miles of canals and navigable rivers and hopes to have completed much of the Cotswold programme within the next 10 years.
