Newly restored canal lock opens
A newly restored lock on the Hereford to Gloucester canal has been officially opened.

Canal boats will not be able to use Oxenhall Lock for some time because the lock gates have yet to be installed.

It is the latest stretch to be completed by the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal Trust which hopes to make the whole canal navigable.

Restoration work by the trust on the waterway has been carried out on and off for the last 20 years.

The lock on the Herefordshire/Gloucestershire border was filled with water for the first time in decades after it was dredged and had work carried out to its structure.

The gates will be fitted later while work on other parts of the canal gets under way.

One of the stretches the trust is hoping to tackle next is at the foot of Aylestone Hill.

Work was delayed after heavy metals were found in the water and had to be cleared out.
