Olympics congestion plan on show

Weymouth
Work on easing traffic in Weymouth will start next year if approved

Plans to ease traffic congestion at the Olympic 2012 sailing events in Dorset have been put on show.

Some £18m has been set aside for the Weymouth Transport Package ahead of the sailing competitions being hosted in the town, and in Portland.

Dorset County Council submitted its proposal for junction and public transport improvements to the Department for Transport in October.

The council said the improvements were equivalent to 15 years of highway work.

The proposals were altered after concerns were raised in a public consultation about disruption in some areas.

Andy Ackerman, head of highways at the county council, said 15 years of road improvement work would be completed in just two years.

"These public exhibitions are an ideal time for residents to see the final designs and ask the project team any questions they have," he said.

The plans will be on show at Hope United Reformed Church in Trinity Street on Friday and at Weymouth Library on Saturday.

Subject to the Department for Transport's approval of the scheme, work will start early next year.

Work on a new relief road from Dorchester to Weymouth and Portland is already under way and is set to finish in 2011.
