Roads, bridleways and footpaths have been closed off in Dorset as an �87m relief road project moves ahead.

Work on the scheme in Weymouth began in December and moved onto its next stage on Monday with the closure of Bincombe Lane between the A354 and West Farm.

Access to routes which cross the new road will be blocked to public access with "minor inconvenience" expected.

Clearance work for the scheme sparked a tree-top protest at Two Mile Coppice until a possession order was secured.

To maintain access to Bincombe, two-way traffic flow in Icen Lane will be allowed during the closure, which will last until the end of July 2010.

Andy Ackerman, Dorset County Council head of highways, said: "We have a duty of care to make sure that the works are at a safe distance from the public.

"These temporary closures, where bridleways and footpaths cross the path of the road, are necessary to achieve that."

The Weymouth relief road aims to ease traffic around Weymouth and Portland, which are hosting the Olympic sailing events.
