Oak trees are to be given away to Dorset residents in a move to improve the local environment. About 2,000 trees are being handed out by North Dorset District Council which said it is part of plans to improve the area and tackle global warming.
The council was given the trees by an oak frame firm from Totnes, Devon, who had surplus oaks after vowing to plant ten saplings for each tree they use.
Trees are being given out to visitors to the council's Blandford office.
The council has said the trees are being given out on a first come, first served basis, with up to two trees per household.
Jeremy Partridge, council tree and landscape officer, said: "This really is pennies from heaven, its not often that a free offer like this comes our way.
"This is a great opportunity to plant one of the most iconic trees of the British isles."
