Windsurfers, kitesurfers and mountain-bikers are to go head-to-head to find out which is the fastest extreme sport. Two windsurfers, two kitesurfers and two mountain-bikers are to race 20 miles along the Dorset coastline to launch a major water sports festival.
The teams will race from Kimmeridge Bay to Sandbanks, in Poole, as part of the Animal Poole Windfest 2004.
Thursday's race, passing Swanage, Old Harry Rocks and Studland Bay, begins the sixth year of the festival.
'Close contest'
Festival spokesman Steve Kitchen said: "Kimmeridge is regarded as one of the best surf breaks on the south coast and is known internationally for its world-class conditions.
"The Purbeck hills offer some of the best mountain biking challenges on the south coast.
"The geographical layout and the varying distance of sea and land have created this race opportunity and will make it a very close contest.
"It's going to be an interesting challenge and fascinating to know who's the fastest."
The festival, which runs until Sunday, sees 100 competitors descend on the waterfront to compete.
