Ancient forest is auctioned off
Forest (generic)
The trust says this is "a rare opportunity"
A wildlife trust will find out later if it has been successful in securing an ancient forest for future generations.

The Dorset Wildlife trust has succeeded in raising 200,000 from donations in just a fortnight in time for Friday's auction of land on the Isle of Purbeck.

It wants to buy four plots of land at Creech, near Wareham - around 120 acres including ancient woodland and meadows.

Managers at the trust say they have been "amazed at the generosity" shown by people ringing to pledge money.

Peter Scupholme, chief executive of the trust, said: "This is a rare opportunity to take a significant step towards reversing the decline in Dorset's precious habitats.

"Not only will securing this land more than double the size of Dorset Wildlife Trust's existing nature reserve but it will also connect many areas of important wildlife land enabling major habitat re-creation to take place.

"Furthermore, it will open up a large area of countryside for everyone to enjoy, as all of the Trust's nature reserves have full public access."
