Both MPs said the understood people were angry about the issue |
Two Devon MPs have made the decision to publish details of their expenses on their websites. Gary Streeter, Conservative MP for Devon South West, said his constituency home expenses were all claimed "within the letter and spirit of the rules". "I have never bought furniture on expenses and never flipped my second home," Mr Streeter said on his website. Alison Seabeck, Labour MP for Plymouth Devonport, said she knew people in her constituency were "angry and confused". Fellow Devon MP Anthony Steen announced on Wednesday he would not stand as a candidate for his Totnes constituency at the next general election. 'Paper clips' Mr Streeter said he understood the anger felt by the general public over recent revelations in the media, adding the "scandal" of MPs' expenses had damaged the reputation of Parliament. "Apart from the running costs - mortgage costs, utilities etc - and a portion of the permitted food allowance, the only other claim is for two rugs from Larry Speare [carpet and bed retailer] and a pair of curtains which were half price," Mr Streeter said. Democracy would be strengthened by the recent dramatic events, he added. Mrs Seabeck said on her website: "The overall sum claimed is already in the public domain, but I'm sure people will want to see how that is broken down showing everything from paper clips to computers."
