Fuel protestors followed a nine mile route through Plymouth |
Fuel protestors have staged a weekend "go-slow" by driving at low speeds through Plymouth. Between 40 and 80 vehicles, including several pony and traps, took part in the event to highlight the effect high fuel prices are having on drivers. It is the second such protest in the city this month. Vehicles drove a nine mile route at speeds of 10-15mph. Organiser Robin Cole said there are a lot of people who now want their voices heard. Mr Cole said: "We're trying to get everyone to unite as one on this. "We're a country of great complainers, reluctant to make a stand, but I think there are a lot of people who now really do want to make their voices heard." Building contractor PJ Kingswell, who had a fleet of vans in the convoy, said: "Fuel is costing us about 5000 more a month than it did six months ago. "There will be redundancies, we just don't know how many yet." Liz Harley from Modbury was one of the pony and trap drivers. She said: "We're fed up with paying these petrol prices and if it continues we're going to have to go back to horsepower." The protestors were greeted with cheers and waves from onlookers at various points along the route from the centre of Plymouth to the Marsh Mills retail park.
