Team aims to help beach gain flag
Torre Abbey Sands
There have already been several poor results this season
Environment Agency investigators are using the latest technology in an attempt to help a south Devon beach regain its blue Flag Status.

Torre Abbey Sands has failed EU bathing water standards, despite efforts to clean up the region's bathing water.

Already this season there have been several poor results and there are fears it will fail to gain Blue Flag status for the second year in a row.

Now an Environment Agency hit squad has come in to trace the pollution.

Detailed samples

They are focussing on Torre Abbey Stream using CCTV cameras, dye tracing and taking detailed samples.

"Much of the stream is culverted, so it's a slow and meticulous job, but we have already made encouraging progress," said Trevor Cronin from the Environment Agency.

He said they had discovered previously unknown pipes, leakages and sewer connections which could all be contributing to the problem.

"We have an excellent working relationship with Torbay Council and are working in partnership with them to ensure any pollution problems on the Torre Abbey stream are identified and put right as soon as possible," he said.
