The school will have 62 places |
A new dental school for Devon and Cornwall has been approved by the Department of Health. The school will be based at the Peninsula Medical Schools sites in Plymouth, Exeter and Truro.
The school will have places for 62 students. It is hoped the new centre may help alleviate the shortage of NHS dentists in the region.
The Department of Health has announced a total of 100 new dental school places across the country.
'Innovative approach'
The places will be offered to students who already hold a degree or who are mature students with a healthcare background.
The South West bid has been praised by the Department of Health for its "innovative approach" to dental teaching.
The students will carry out much of their training in the community and not in the classroom.
The first students will join the new dental school in 2007.
