Dental school decision is delayed

No decision is now expected from the government before Christmas
A decision on whether a dental school should be established in the South West has been delayed.

A bid by the Peninsula Medical School is currently in the process of being considered by the government.

A recent report by councils in Devon and Cornwall revealed strong public dissatisfaction with the availability of dental services in the two counties.

The Peninsula Medical School argues that could be addressed by training dentists in the region.

It submitted a bid to the government to establish a dental school earlier this year.

Waiting list

Last month, it held meetings with officials in the final stage of the process to determine whether to establish one in the South West.

If it succeeds, it would add to its current intake of trainee doctors.

The intention is that most dental students would stay in the region after they have qualified.

The medical school had hoped it would hear whether it has been successful before Christmas, but that is now unlikely before the new year.
