Field hospital 'cuts A&E numbers'

New figures suggest Plymouth's late night minor injuries unit is making a significant difference in cutting the number of people going to casualty.

It has been running since the summer and treats people who have been injured while out in the city's clubland.

The unit is located off Union Street in premises borrowed from a local charity.

The research suggests it has cut attendance at A&E at the city's Derriford Hospital by about 16 people in a typical evening.

Investigate attacks

The idea of the unit is to relieve pressure on the casualty department and to allow police to investigate attacks quickly but Barry Barratt, an emergency care practitioner with the unit, says it is about more than just helping the police and the NHS.

"The other hidden factor is the patient's experience," he said.

"We're actually taking the NHS to the patient with this project and what we haven't looked at yet is how the patient feels."

The unit will be playing its part in the New Year's Eve festivities with discussions under way about how it can continue in the future.
