Devon donkeys take centre stage
Donkey (generic)
The donkeys are given special training
A Devon-based animal sanctuary says it has been one of the busiest years for requests for its donkeys to take part in Palm Sunday events.

The Donkey sanctuary in Sidmouth is lending out 11 of its donkeys to take part in processions and services across the county.

The animals will take centre stage at churches in Beer, Budleigh Salterton, Honiton and at Exeter Cathedral.

Donkeys are given special training for taking part in such events.

'Extra handling'

Dawn Svendsen from the sanctuary said: "We have to choose donkeys that are medically fit and healthy and they must be used to walking on a lead rope and be comfortable with the extra handling by the public.

"It is important that each donkey feels confident and happy, as his or her well being is of paramount importance to us."

The sanctuary was set up in 1973 as a charity and is home to about 500 donkeys.
