The plans include an Olympic-size swimming pool |
Plans have been unveiled for a 30m sports and recreation complex to transform Plymouth leisure facilities. The Life Centre in Central Park could include a competition-sized ice rink, Olympic-sized swimming pool and conference and restaurant facilities.
A 12-court sports hall, fitness suite and basketball arena are also proposed.
The plan will also mean the completion of Plymouth Argyle Football Club's Home Park stadium, which will be situated next to the Life Centre.
Dated facilities
The proposals have been put forward by Plymouth City Council, the University of Plymouth, the football club, the Primary Care Trust and Marjons College.
Under the proposals, the Life Centre would be built on land currently occupied by existing leisure facilities in Central Park, such as the Mayflower Centre and Central Park swimming pool, and land to the side of Home Park.
The Mayflower Centre and swimming pool were both built in the 1960s and are dated and in need of renovation.
A report, which will go before the council's cabinet on 15 March says: "If no action is taken, the decline of Central Park will be likely to accelerate, to the detriment of this green space and the city as a whole.
"However, the park does have great potential and there is considerable scope to exploit existing opportunities relating to its location, accessibility, size, prominence and role as a venue for formal and informal activities.
"The vision is to create a Life Centre within Central Park that will be an outstanding venue for sport, recreation and leisure."
