About 200 licensed premises were visited in the operation |
Police in Devon and Cornwall have been cracking down on unlicensed door staff in the force area. Since September last year, door staff nationwide have been required to have a proper licence or face a possible fine or imprisonment.
About 200 licensed premises across Devon and Cornwall were visited by officers during the force-wide operation on Friday night.
Warning notices were issued to about 100 unlicensed door staff.
'Important element'
Police say just over 800 licences have been issued in the force area but they estimate there are more than three times that number of people working as door staff in the region's pubs and clubs.
The licences confirm that an identity and criminal background check have been carried out.
It also means the licence holder has met requirements for training and professional standards.
Det Insp Keith Perkin says properly accredited door staff can help reduce violence.
He said: "Licensed staff are an important element in reducing violent crime.
"They receive training in conflict management, first aid aspects of the law, drug awareness and health and safety.
"We believe they give a more professional service to those going to clubs."
