Two sites have been set aside for the kit houses |
A new factory has opened in Cornwall to build affordable starter homes in the South West. The timber framed houses come in kit form and will cost as little as 90,000 to buyers.
Frame Homes' new factory in Redruth will supply four housing associations with homes on sites around the region.
The move follows pressure by the government for 25% of all new housing association properties to be affordable to first time buyers.
Many of the houses will be sold on a part-ownership basis, with purchasers paying half the cost of the house.
David Renwick, chief executive of the Ocean Housing Group, said: "There are very few, if any development sites of any size in West Country villages, but there are probably lots of small in-fill plots that could take a pair of semi-detached or a terrace of three houses.
"Using this type of design we could provide opportunities for local younger people to get a foot on the property ladder through shared ownership".
Ocean has already placed an order with Frame Homes for 35 houses, 20 for rent and 15 for shared ownership, at Carclaze Yard, St Austell.
Eight will be ordered for delivery to a site in East Taphouse that Ocean is developing in partnership with Caradon District Council.
