Torquay's seafront was temporarily closed because of debris

Torbay was hit by some of its worst flooding for more than 20 years at the end of October.

High tides combined with strong winds saw massive waves hit the seafront. Several businesses were damaged, homes were flooded and some cars written off.

Torbay Council said it was planning to turn to the government for help in meeting the costs.

During the flooding, chunks of the sea wall were torn away. Young's Park at Goodrington, Paignton, was under several feet of water.

Some of the money will come from within the authority's own resources or from insurers. But the amount is so great that the council is to ask the government for extra help.

The authority already has an estimated overspend of nearly �600,000, so it is be hoping for a favourable response from ministers.
