Hill farmers' scheme begins
Sheep on Dartmoor
The project will focus on providing advice and guidance to farmers
Farmers on Dartmoor are to be given more support to help plan for a sustainable future.

The Dartmoor Hill Farm Project which aims to help farmers to help themselves, is being launched at Two Bridges on Monday.

The project follows research in 2002 by the University of Exeter's Centre for Rural Research, looking at the state of farming on Dartmoor.

It found the harsh weather and landscape meant many farmers worked very hard but achieved very little and felt undervalued.

A Hill Farm Project Officer, Cathy Heath, has been appointed to work with the hill farm community to take forward recommendations contained in the report.

The project will focus on providing advice and guidance to farmers, opportunities for them to work together and communicate more effectively with one another and directing them to grants and funding available.

The hill farm project will also work with existing organisations and groups and helping them to develop ideas and initiatives.

Peter Morris of the National Sheep Association will be the guest speaker at Monday evening's launch.
