Closure threat for tourist centre
Tourist information centre generic
The tourist information centre in Ivybridge was opened in 1987
A Devon tourist information centre is under threat of closure by a local council.

The centre situated at the South Dartmoor Leisure complex on the edge of Ivybridge was opened in 1987.

But South Hams District Council say it is not achieving its objectives and is costing too much money to run.

A report to councillors says the centre is mostly being used by local people and is not succeeding in its aim of attracting more visitors to the area.

Possible redundancies

It says sales revenue could be increased, but this would probably require too much investment.

Relocating to Ivybridge town centre is another option, but the report says that would probably be "inappropriate because the town simply is not a tourist destination".

The final option is to close the centre which would be likely to involve redundancies.

But the report acknowledges this will "produce a negative reaction locally".
