Bid to restore Dunkirk vessel
Boats on the way to the evacuation of Dunkirk
The Lady Cable saved nearly 600 military personnel
A campaign has been launched to restore a dilapidated World War II Dunkirk "little ship".

The 40-foot motor launch Lady Cable, which took tourist parties on mackerel fishing trips in Torbay, became one of the flotilla of UK vessels which saved thousands of troops in the Dunkirk evacuation.

The Lady Cable, which sailed from Torquay in south Devon, saved nearly 600 military personnel, transferring some to ships and returning to Dover with others.

She has been in a state of disrepair since 1994, and now a charity is being set up to raise cash for a restoration programme which could cost thousands of pounds.

Before repairs can start, the Lady Cable will have to be surveyed to establish what needs to be done to make her seaworthy again.

It is hoped the vessel will be restored in time for the D-Day 60th anniversary celebrations at Torquay in June.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the Save the Lady Cable Fund can do so by phoning 087 0321 3210.
