Veterans of the Dunkirk rescue gather on Remembrance Sunday |
The momentous events of Dunkirk have been remembered by veterans in Kent who were part of the rescue mission. Friends and family joined 10 veterans of the mission that saved the British Expeditionary Force at the start of World War Two.
Two boats used to bring the troops home were at the pier.
Many vessels that went to Dunkirk gathered in the Thames estuary before crossing the Channel.
The Remembrance Day ceremony was to pay respects to those who never returned.
Ian Pearson, who owns one of the boats, the Wendy Ken, said the area had played a significant part in the rescue.
He said: "Quite a contingent of vessels were from this area.
"They gathered at Sheerness and Southend ready for their journeys off to Ramsgate and Dover and for the voyage across to Dunkirk, for the evacuation of 338,000 souls."
