Police continue prisoner hunt
Dempsey
Dempsey: Police warn not to approach him
Police are still hunting a prisoner who has been on the run for five days after escaping from a hospital ward.

John Dempsey, 45, an inmate from Exeter Prison, was admitted to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital on Christmas Eve for treatment for an unspecified medical condition.

He then absconded from the ward on Wednesday.

The Prison Service has launched an investigation. The inquiry team is being led by a governor from another jail.

It will be looking at whether two officers rather than one should have been looking after Dempsey.

The Prison Service say he was a low-level risk prisoner and was not restrained in hospital.

Dempsey is described as 1.7m tall, with short grey hair and blue eyes. He left the ward wearing pyjamas. He has also been known as John Blackstock.

He was serving a custodial sentence for dishonesty and was due to be released in September this year.

Before being imprisoned, Dempsey lived in the Exeter area.

Police said he is not believed to be dangerous, but should not be approached.
