Wartime bomb detonated
Bomb Squad and police
The Royal Navy squad called in the Royal Engineers
A 1,000 kilogram (2,200 lb) World War II bomb found in a Devon quarry has been detonated in a controlled explosion.

A team from 33 Engineer Regiment travelled from Essex to carry out the operation.

Workers at the Steer Point brickworks in Brixton uncovered the bomb shortly before 1500 BST on Thursday as they were removing clay from the quarry.

A number of surrounding cottages were evacuated.

The bomb was believed to be a German-made, electrically-fused device.

A 500-metre exclusion zone was set up around the site while the specialist team got ready to detonate.
