Seven days of industrial action are planned |
Bus drivers in Devon have gone on strike, leaving passengers with just a skeleton service. The industrial action is affecting Stagecoach services in Torbay, Exeter and east Devon on for the whole of Tuesday.
Drivers voted overwhelmingly to strike in support of a 10% pay claim and a reduction of one hour in their working week.
The company says it has made a substantial offer in return for changes to working practices.
Skeleton service
About a third of services were running.
Drivers have apologised in advance for the disruption, but say they are fighting for a fair and just settlement.
Stagecoach is making arrangements to provide a skeleton service during the strike, but only between the hours of 0700 and 1900 BST.
Drivers are on strike from 0001 BST on Tuesday until 0001 BST on Wednesday.
Vehicles are being driven by members of the management team and drivers brought in from other parts of the country.
Stagecoach employs about 640 drivers in the areas to be affected. More than 600 drivers are taking part in the strike.
Failed talks
The strike follows failed talks between Stagecoach and the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT).
Drivers want a 10% pay rise, which would give them 6.50 an hour, plus a one-hour cut in their working week.
Stagecoach had offered a 3.2% pay rise. The company then said drivers could can have the full pay rise - but only if they lose a week's holiday and their daily breaks.
But the RMT says the offer is not enough.
Drivers have agreed to seven days of strike action staggered over three weeks.
The next strike is due to take place on Friday.
