The RMT union has rejected Stagecoach's 3.2% pay rise offer |
Bus drivers in Devon are to be balloted over possible strike action. The strike threat comes from the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT), which represents hundreds of staff working for Stagecoach in the county.
The union has been asking for a substantial pay rise and reduced hours.
Stagecoach has said the door is still open for talks to settle the dispute.
Ballot membership
The RMT says talks, which have been on-going since April, have reached a stalemate.
Last month, employees belonging to the RMT rejected the company's offer of a 3.2% annual pay increase.
The RMT has now agreed to ballot members for industrial action. One possibility is a series of one-day strikes.
This could mean buses being taken off the roads in the peak holiday season in July.
About 700 of the company's employees, from drivers and controllers to clerical staff, will be balloted in the next fortnight.
The RMT hopes the sending out of ballot papers could prove a catalyst for further negotiations.
Stagecoach says it is still willing to discuss the union's concerns.
