More South West-based troops have returned to Devon from the Gulf.

Royal Marines from 539 Assault Squadron, which is based in Plymouth, arrived home on landing ship RFA Sir Bedivere, which berthed at Millbay Docks.

The Sir Bedivere left the UK last September to carry out exercises in the Gulf as a support ship.

She provided ammunition to eight Royal Navy and four US Navy vessels, including coalition minesweeper vessels.

Humanitarian aid

Once minesweeping tasks were over, the ship became the home for 300 Royal Marines in Kuwait.

The commanding officer of 539 Assault Squadron joined the ship to welcome home the 26 marines and 50-strong crew on board.

Lieutenant Colonel Nick Anthony said: "The guys did an enormously good job out there.

"They did things they were not expected to do at great risk and showed a lot of courage."

And around 50 crew on RFA Sir Percivale have arrived home after more than 100 days at sea.

She berthed at Millbay Docks on Thursday morning before heading for Southampton.

She was involved in providing humanitarian aid at the port of Umm Qasr.
