Area reopens after fire
dawlish fire
Firefighters had to carry equipment to the scene
Part of a south Devon town will be reopening to the public on Monday morning following a fire over the weekend which destroyed a shop.

An investigation has now begun into the cause of the fire at Dawlish Warren.

At the height of the fire, 70 firefighters were tackling the flames, and the area was closed all day on Sunday as the work continued.

Firefighters were hampered by a low rail bridge at the scene of the fire.

No injuries

Two special vehicles designed to get under the bridge were used, along with 10 other pumps, but the firefighters had to carry all their equipment to the scene.

Concerns have been raised in the past over the difficulty of getting emergency vehicles to the area.

Firefighters said they would have been able to tackle the flames sooner, and with fewer people, if they had better access to the site.

There were no injuries, but one person was led to safety.
