Canal reopens after bridge fall

The scene of the accident
The centuries-old bridge was damaged in the accident

A Derbyshire canal, which was closed for several days when a bridge collapsed, has reopened.

The bridge, part of a private farm road over the Trent and Mersey Canal at Stenson, gave way on Monday as a tractor and trailer crossed.

After the trailer was moved, contractors were brought in to clear parts of the bridge from the waterway.

Now the canal has reopened, dozens of boats which had been stranded in nearby marinas can now move.

The bridge, a grade II listed brick structure believed to be more than 200 years old, will now be inspected to see if it can be repaired.
