Crowds have been flocking to see newly-hatched peregrine falcons in a nest on a city cathedral.

Two falcons built a nest on Derby Cathedral late last year and four chicks hatched successfully last month.

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust said more than 1,000 people had come to look at the birds since they set up a viewing station complete with telescopes.

Members of the trust said it was a superb opportunity to see an animal which was still rare in the UK.

Nick Brown, of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, said: "These are magical birds, they have such a charisma about them and it is so unusual to see them in the city.

"In fact they are very difficult to see out in the countryside, there are only 1,000 pairs which may sound a lot but spread over the country it's not much and it's almost impossible to catch sight of them.

"So here you have a fantastic opportunity to see these falcons, close up and raising a family."
