There are five pairs breeding in London |
A firework display has been called off to protect a rare pair of peregrine falcons nesting in London. The Mostly Mozart festival's opening night display was due to be held on Tuesday at the Barbican.
But the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) told organisers it could distress the birds which have been breeding nearby.
The RSPB says there are currently a total of five breeding pairs of peregrine falcons in London.
Tim Web of the RSPB told BBC News Online: "We're delighted we've got these five and the signs are that we may well have another pair next year.
"These are threatened species making a steady recovery. They feed on pigeons and we have plenty of those in London so this natural 'crowd' control is welcome."
Mr Webb said restrictions imposed on those living near a nesting site were not always welcome, so the RSPB would be holding events to help Londoners learn more about the birds.
The annual Mostly Mozart festival is devoted to the music of the composer and aims to introduce new audiences to the genre.
Instead of the fireworks, visitors to the opening night will be offered a free glass of champagne.
