Armed police have visited pupils at a Derbyshire school to talk about the dangers BB guns pose. They showed 13-year-old students how difficult it is to tell the difference between a BB or replica and a firing gun and the hazards involved.
Real examples of weapons and a video called Split Second were used to illustrate this.
The short film shows an example of how a teenager was shot dead by armed officers after waving a fake gun.
On average in Derbyshire more than 80% of all firearms incidents which police are called out to involve a BB gun, air weapon or other replica.
Supt Lynn Harris said: "They are very realistic and if a member of the public sees anyone waving one around or being pointed at them in many cases it will cause them to panic and call the police.
"This could quite easily result in armed officers being dispatched to carry out an arrest."
