Borough council head steps down
The head of a Derbyshire council is leaving weeks after a critical report into its operation.

John Rice, chief executive of Erewash Borough Council, said he would step down at the end of this month.

He was suspended in October after an Audit Commission report into the use of interim managers, consultants and agency staff at the council.

The former chief executive will now be leaving the council permanently on 31 December after a mutual agreement.

Shaun Field will be acting chief executive until a replacement is found, a council statement said.

New audit commission findings on Erewash Borough Council are due to be released on Tuesday.

The council said Mr Rice is leaving "following a professional divergence of opinion with some members of the council's leadership on the future strategic direction for the organisation".

He became chief executive at Erewash in March 2004, following a critical corporate governance inspection report in 2003.
