A council which was condemned for its "serious failings" has drawn up a recovery strategy.

Erewash Borough Council was criticised in two reports, including one by the Audit Commission which questioned the conduct of some leaders.

In response, the council has now released details of its "Road to Improvement".

It highlights the specific areas, such as customer service, which will be given top priority.

The top five priorities are:

  • Benefits assessment and payments

  • Council tax collection

  • Strategic housing

  • Management of public space

  • Customer service improvements

The strategy will be overseen by the council's new chief executive, John Rice, who was appointed in March.

In his introduction to the strategy, council leader Robert Parkinson says he is "proud" of the progress made so far.

He says: "We have faced up to our short-comings and problems, and taken full account of the criticism levelled against us."

Towns within Erewash Borough Council include Long Eaton, Sawley, Sandiacre and Ilkeston.
