Cash offered for 'smart schools'
A 12-year project to bring state-of-the-art facilities to secondary schools in Derbyshire is being launched by the county council.

The government-funded "smart schools" scheme will renovate facilities and introduce computer-aided learning.

The first schools to benefit include Bolsover, Shirebrook and Stubbin Lane before the scheme is rolled out.

The council wants public feedback on the plans before the first money is spent in 2008.

Councillor Alan Charles, from the county council, said: "The smart schools programme is not just about building and refurbishing schools.

"It is about rethinking the way we deliver academic courses and vocational qualifications for young people.

"It will involve schools and colleges working together to give young people all the study options they want near to their home."
