The new Eagle Centre will double in size when complete
Almost 3,000 new jobs will be created at Derby's revamped Eagle Centre when it reopens in three years time.

The official ground-breaking ceremony took place on Monday to celebrate the start of the 300m redevelopment.

When it is complete, the Eagle Centre will have doubled in size, with more than 100 shops and spanning a site equivalent to 17 football pitches.

Development director Peter Miller said it would be at least comparable to Sheffield's Meadowhall Centre.

He said: "We believe it's going to be better. It's going to be more modern and it's going to have some unique elements to it. We've got an 800 plus seater food court.

"We're going to be introducing new retailers to Derby, new retailers to the East Midlands - acclaimed retailers. So there'll be lots of unique elements to the development."

The redevelopment, put forward by the Westfield group, is expected to be completed by 2008.
