A petition calling for a posthumous knighthood for legendary football manager Brian Clough was handed into Downing Street on Tuesday. The former Nottingham Forest and Derby County boss died from stomach cancer last month aged 69.
Derby North MP Bob Laxton presented the 7,500 signatures calling for him to be honoured to Tony Blair.
He has admitted that it has never happened before, but said he hoped public pressure may make a difference.
After handing in three folders of signatures and messages, Mr Laxton said: "We will have to keep our fingers crossed and hope we get a success here."
The father-of-three died on 20 September in Derby City General Hospital.
On Thursday thousands of fans gathered at Derby FC's Pride Park for a memorial service for their ex-manager.
So many wanted to pay their respects that the service had to be moved from Derby Cathedral.
Clough led Derby County and Nottingham Forest to league titles and twice won the European Cup with Forest.
Campaign organiser Marcus Alton said: "I believe that for a man who re-wrote the history books of our national game, the history books should be re-written for him.
"A committee of MPs wanted the honours system changed because it's too secretive and doesn't reflect public opinion.
"Well, let's start now with an honour for Brian Clough."
