The A537 leading to the spa town of Buxton has been named Britain's worst death trap for motorcyclists.

Another three roads into Buxton are among the 13 most dangerous accident sites for riders.

The report by the AA Motoring Trust pointed out that many bikers fell victim to roads they had singled out because they were challenging.

Spectacular scenery

As well as the A537, the A54 between Congleton and Buxton, the A6 between Derby and Buxton, and the A515 from Lichfield to Buxton made the list of most dangerous bike routes.

The area is popular with motorcyclists because of its spectacular scenery, winding roads and long straights.

The study also found that motorcyclists were 30 times more likely to die in crashes than car drivers and made up one in six of all road deaths - despite accounting for only 1% of all miles travelled.

Richard Freeman from the AA Motoring Trust said: "The whole point of this report is to drill home the message that you can save lives very cheaply on the roads.

"Because people think motorcyclists are their own worst enemy, there's the belief that nothing can be done for them."

He added: "Most motorcyclists are killed or injured at junctions, where often it's the car driver's fault."
