New woodland could be created in the East Midlands with the launch of a study to find out what people want from the countryside. Figures show the region has the least amount of woodland cover in the country - just 5%.
Now the Forestry Commission is asking for people's views over the next three months to form an action plan.
The commission wants communities to get the most out of their woodlands - for recreation, conservation and business.
Only 5% of the land area is covered with woodland compared to an England average of 8%. The Forestry Commission says public attitude surveys have identified strong public support for the creation of more woodlands in the region.
A partnership of key regional environmental organisations, working under the banner of "Space4trees" has drafted a strategy for trees and woodlands.
Dave Parker, from the commission, said it is about balancing conservation and woodland management with public enjoyment.
He said: "People in the East Midlands have less access to woodland than others in other parts of the country.
"It is a regional priority to create more woodland close to where people live so that everyone can get those benefits."
