Former football manager Brian Clough has received an honour from a university in his hometown.

The former manager of Nottingham Forest and Derby County was presented with an honorary doctorate at the University of Teesside in Middlesbrough on Friday.

Clough was born in Middlesbrough and went on to set a goal-scoring record for his hometown club, scoring 197 goals in 213 league games.

He was given an honorary doctor of science degree at Middlesbrough Town Hall by the university's chancellor Sir Leon Brittan.

Clough is already an Order of the British Empire and a freeman of both Nottingham and Derby.

He led both Derby County and Nottingham Forest to league championships.

He also won two European Cups with the Nottingham club.

As a player, Clough won two England caps and scored 251 goals in 274 games as a striker for Middlesbrough and Sunderland.
