Brian Clough led Derby County to a league championship |
Former football manager Brian Clough will be officially given freedom of the city of Derby on 4 May at special ceremony at Pride Park. Clough, who led both Derby County and Nottingham Forest to league championships, had a successful liver transplant in January.
He will tour the city in a vintage Rolls-Royce, visiting the Baseball Ground - Derby County's old home - and the city centre where he will plant a tree opposite the River Gardens.
The city's mayor will present Clough with a scroll at a ceremony at Derby County's present ground, Pride Park.
Driving force
The presentation and speeches will be broadcast live throughout the stadium and as a live webcast.
The Derby mayor will lead Clough onto the pitch just before the match against Ipswich.
Clough revealed in his book Walking on Water that heavy drinking had damaged his health.
Derby County Chairman Lionel Pickering said: "Brian was the driving force behind this club's revival and his fantastic achievements won Derby County international recognition.
As a player, Clough won two England caps and scored 251 goals in 274 games as a striker for Middlesbrough and Sunderland.
Clough, 68, who has received an OBE, still lives in Derby.
He is the only living freeman of the city and the first individual to receive the award since 1968.
