Soldier's family face long wait
Michael Aston
Michael Aston wants to keep up the pressure for answers

The father of a Derbyshire soldier killed in Iraq has been told it could take years to get more information about his murder.

Corporal Russell Aston from Coton-in-the-Elms in Derbyshire and five military police colleagues were shot protecting a police station.

The Special Investigation Branch has told the families it might be 3 years before full details of what happened will be uncovered.

Russell's father Mike said they are glad of more information, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions

Credible witnesses

He felt by joining forces with the other families, they could keep the investigation alive.

He said: "We are hoping to keep the public awareness (of the event ) going.

"There are unanswered questions regarding the brutality and the unusualness of the deaths of these soldiers and really as things stand at the moment it is unsatisfactory."

At the moment there are questions over other soldiers sighted in the area at the time and what happened to a distress signal sent from the police station.

Mr Aston said he has been assured the investigations will continue but the authorities are having difficulty finding credible witnesses.
