Floods bridge reopens to traffic

A bridge closed following flooding in Cumbria last month has reopened.

The Southwaite Bridge, near Cockermouth, was shut after the road approaching the structure was damaged by the torrents on 20 November.

Cumbria County Council reopened the bridge to local traffic on Monday following resurfacing work.

The bridge's parapet walls still need to be repaired and traffic lights are in place as the carriageway has been narrowed by protective barriers.

A council spokesman said the route remained unsuitable for lorries and other heavy vehicles.

The number of bridge closures across the county now stands at 10.
