Mourners pay respects to BBC man

Mr Lacey commentated on more than 500 games for Carlisle

Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral of BBC Radio Cumbria football commentator Derek Lacey.

Mr Lacey, who covered more than 500 matches for the station, died last week after a stroke, aged 67.

Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott paid tribute to the broadcaster at the memorial service calling him an "honest and loyal" friend.

A minute's applause will be heard at the team's opening game of the League One season on 8 August.

Mr Abbott, speaking at Carlisle Crematorium, said: "I told Derek so many things in private when we were having a pint and never once did he bring them out when he had the microphone.

"I think that shows you the honesty and loyalty of Derek Lacey and why this room is packed to the rafters."

Mr Lacey's commentary career began in 1978 when he worked for Cumbrian hospital radio covering Carlisle matches.

He took on the role of Carlisle United commentator for Radio Cumbria in 1998.

He leaves a partner, Hilary, and two grown-up children Helen and Steve.
